For accomplished professionals who are quieter than the room expects

Your experience should speak for itself. In the interview, it has to speak through you.

You are good at what you do. Your track record proves it, and the people who have worked beside you know it. Competence has never been the question.

The question arrives forty minutes into an interview, when someone across the table asks you to tell them about yourself, and years of genuine expertise compress into a single, unstructured answer. You hear yourself circling. You add context that wasn't requested. You finish knowing you were more capable than what they just heard.

Reserve is not a deficit. An unprepared answer is.

Conventional interview advice assumes an extroverted candidate. Command the room. Project. Perform. For a reserved professional, that advice is not only exhausting, it is counterproductive: the moment you adopt a persona, the judgment and depth that make you valuable go quiet.

Consider instead what reserved professionals do exceptionally well. They observe. They listen for what is actually being asked. They notice the second panelist's real concern and remember it fifteen minutes later. The Cheat Sheet does not ask you to become a different person. It gives your existing strengths a structure, so they are visible in the one hour that decides the outcome.

And because an interview is decided as much by what happens around it as in it, at checkout you can add the companion piece: the Interview Checklist, covering the critical details before, during and after the meeting that experienced candidates most often overlook.

Written for professionals who

  • Are strong in the role and consistently undersold in the interview
  • Know the answer and still lose the thread once the question is live
  • Find "Tell me about yourself" harder than any technical question on the panel
  • Leave an interview reviewing what they should have said, for days
  • Have outgrown advice that amounts to "be more confident"
  • Intend to be hired on substance, not on a persona they would have to maintain

Complete the system with the Interview Checklist

The Cheat Sheet covers what you say. The Checklist covers everything else: the details before, during and after an interview that are dismissed as small and are, in practice, decisive. The document you forgot to bring. The question you meant to ask. The thank-you note that never went out.

  • Before: what to confirm, prepare and carry so you arrive composed rather than scrambling
  • During: the moments in the room that reserved professionals most often let pass
  • After: the follow-through that keeps your name on the shortlist

Ann B, founder of Ann B Consulting, LLC

Hey, I'm Ann B. I call myself the Shy Professional.

I'm the owner and founder of Ann B Consulting, LLC. I take a 360-degree approach to the job search, from submitting the application to your first day on the job, and I built it for people like me. Advice written for extroverts rarely helps those of us who are shy, so I help shy professionals and overthinkers identify and master the small details that seem not to matter, and that can quietly cost you your dream job.

After graduating college, I assumed landing a job would be easy. I was wrong. My résumé needed work, but even after a number of revisions, nothing. I could not find a corporate role in my field, so I managed a pizza chain instead. I reached out to people I thought could help me get on at their companies. No luck.

I was never ashamed of that job. It gave me the work ethic that carried me into nonprofit program management and, later, into corporate, advising Fortune 500 companies on engaging the communities they do business in. That role demanded constant networking: hundreds of conversations, events every week, relationships to build and maintain. As a shy, introverted person, I expected it to be draining. It wasn't, because I did it as myself. I never came home exhausted from a chamber cocktail hour.

When I landed that role, former colleagues asked who I knew, who got me the interview. The answer was no one. I never had a contact I could call and have a job the next week. Everything I learned came through trial and error, and from my mother, who taught me to master the details of an application and to always send the thank-you note.

That is why I started this business. Shy professionals have it harder in the job search and in the room, and I wanted to share what worked for me. I don't come from HR, and I won't tell you to "just go out and network." I'll show you how. Interviews can be intimidating and networking more so, but there are ways to prepare that make you steadier each time an opportunity arrives.

The next interview will come. Be ready for it.
